[Stoves] Remarkable stove

Dear Ron

The stove is typical of the "Rural Improved Stove project" stoves that were (mostly) built-in.

For interest, here are some traditional designs:

[Diagram Description automatically generated with medium confidence]
The big difference between the traditional stoves and the 1982-1992 initiative is the grate under the fire with a large ash cleanout area underneath. These stoves can burn well (enough) with rice and wheat straw. The exposed area of the wok is large to accommodate a large fire cooking at high temperature.

Such fires are well-suited to having a large rapid lighting, fast burn and quick burnout. That suits for cooking style for a great portion of the country. Considering a TLUD one must also consider how you would reproduce the flame's intensity. Generally speaking the gasifiers do not have anything like the firepower of an agriwaste stove. If the char is not burned, then the cook has to provide additional fuel to cover for the energy lost to retained char.

As you will appreciate, the cooking style will not change, the fuel will probably not change, so if the fuel consumption is the same, extracting char can only be accomplished by increasing the heat transfer efficiency and having a smaller fire. If you want to have an actual decrease in fuel consumption, the efficiency has to be further improved. To put numbers on it, if the traditional stove efficiency is 25% and you want to extract 50% of the energy as char, the heat transfer efficiency has to be increased to 50% - no mean feat for a cooking stove. To reduce input energy consumption and still collect 50% as char, it would be necessary to reach say 60% - a tall order for a biomass stove.

Crispin

The. stove and chimney portions are from about 12:20 , with glimpses of the stove. and chimney to the end a few minutes later.

            Here are a few observations

The.stove is outdoors.(under a large roof) essentially all by itself. This might have been dictated by the need for a chimney. Often stoves are outside - but not needed here when one has a chimney. Should be minimum smoke here for the cook.

The chimney is a tall slit in the rock, closed by about 8 normal bricks on end. Maybe a world record minimum number of bricks for a chimney. Just a short horizontal-brick hole exit at the top.

I think the design is close to that of a rodket. Could have "easily" been a TLUD. Is a two burner design, with a very wide vertical hole for a wok. I know nothing of woks, but this is probably not typical.

Excellent support for the wok, but I fear large radial heat loss to the outer stone. The Julien Winter Bangladesh TLUD design with an interior steel cylinder might have saved considerable later fuel. This. seems to be in a very mild apart of China, so intentional. heating of stone would not be an advantage. (especially being outdoors).

I couldn't tell anything of the design of the (has to be holey) stone grate between the fire and the very large ash pit below. How many holes of what depth and diameter?

Overall, a very interesting dwelling design - but not one apt to have a lot of replicas. Too much time and physical effort..

Ron

Dear Friends

Although the majority of this video is about someone working really hard to carve a home out of the wilderness, there is indeed a stove that works and has a very unexpected solution to fitting the chimney. There may be a lesson for some in how it is done.

You have to endure a lot of work to get to it, but the home includes a bult in stove based on the common "Chinese improved stove" as per the 1983 national programme.

Crispin
