Good question. I’m anxious to hear other answers.

In general, we want secondary air as close to the hot produced char as possible. Starting with a partial fuel load works against that general principal. I think I have found a waay to have the secondary air follow the falling char. Will try to get that out soon. Never been tested.
.
Anyone else “solved" that problem? Using a fan/blower excepted.

Kevin Mclean has told me of cooks running their stove (not a TLUD, but could have been) just for the char. I like that solution also. Lots of 55 gallon barrels running that way

There are many times when I would not want a one hour fire. The ability to start and stop and then restart the fuel load would be useful.
