The other feature about how Alex managed the char discharge was that it was
through a water bath which not only quenched the chr but provided an air
seal too.

I think the problem was finding a market for the char which was worth more
than the heat value forgone. I didn't realise the slash wood he was using
was not virgin timber so that would have militated against its use as
biochar.
