[Stoves] New York Times story on charcoal production and deforestation

Dear Crispin, you could not of said it better about the charcoal bans.

Interesting that the author uses terms such as 'raiding' the forests and
yet isn't this these peoples own forest? And from some sentences it almost
seems as though the Congolese twig collectors are the ones to blame for
global climate emissions from this story not and high end New York
furniture buyers 😆
[image: image.png]

But well done to the Author including this quote at least ''A man
approached our small group of journalists and before we could introduce
ourselves, he began shouting: “I know what you’re doing. You’re writing a
story about climate change. You’ll write it, but we’re not going to
benefit. Not us. We are suffering here,” he said, declining to give his
name because he was angry at the general state of life in Congo.'' Perhaps
he had been interviewed before

?

It's so hard to understand how so many of the best scientists who have
written so many good papers about bans not working and the need to
formalize wood fuel systems in Kenya can be so ignored by the same Govt.
who issues purchasing tenders for the same energy commodity it has banned!

Anyways here are a few links to some recent charcoal reading from around
East Africa for those who like reading about charcoal might find of
interest.

Meanwhile it seems that plans are afoot to power German biomass energy
stations with wood chips shipped in from Namibia.
https://www.germanclimatefinance.de/2021/02/25/german-climate-finance-project-used-to-create-biomass-supply-chain-for-german-energy-providers/
Does this mean this type of wood extraction (conversion to grazing) is a
greater driver of true deforestation rather then the typical charcoal
makers forest degradation mentioned in the article above?
