List and Crispin (adding Kip Patrick and Kevin McLean):

	1. Thanks for your recommendation.

I got my response in on the 13th, saying (with three positive responses):
"There is a relatively easy solution. The Congolese should shift to charcoal-making stoves. Maybe ten times as many meals with such stoves. And the char should go in the ground as biochar. Such stoves are being introduced at essentially zero cost, as simple mods of 3-stone stoves.

	2. Although the article is about stoves, most of the 31 responses concentrate on some other topic.

	3. I wish I had made four other points:

		a. Three-stone stoves exist for several good reasons - especially cost. I decided that I shouldn’t use Kevin’s name for his rapidly-being-accepted small modification, which adds almost NO cost, and saves users time.

  		b. People are making char because of lack of jobs and income. There is a lot of work needed to get the wood to the right size for char-making stoves. Trucks can carry more energy if they are carrying wood rather than char.

		c. Users of essentially free stoves can make money if they start with wood (not ever, if starting with char). And more crops if the produced char is itself not used for cooking.

		d. Cooking with char is incredibly stupid and CCA is correct in discouraging its use, Hopefully, CCA will see the wisdom of making char, given the high costs of their present global-warming preferences.

Chad is perhaps the clearest example of things gone wrong, gone right and gone wrong again.

A charcoal producerinterviewed by the Times aptly sums up the issue: “What can you do when you see the only way to feed your family is to cut trees?”
