[Stoves] ***SPAM*** RE: [Biochar] Energy utilization from process

To All who appreciate TLUD stoves,

I encourage all to look at the cited article from Colombia. I have scanned it and am reading in the Introduction and starting the Results.

In many ways, it is good work. Do look at the references to find some that we might have overlooked earlier.

At this early stage, I raise two issues:
For a TLUD stove, what is a "Hot start"?

They discuss "producer gas" and "The main product of the gasification-based or top-lit updraft (TLUD) cookstoves is the fuel gas, (18)<javascript:void(0);> whose thermochemical process is conducted similarly to the downdraft reactors. (19)<javascript:void(0);>"

PSA: That is not true. The error is continued in their Figure 14: Where they show oxidation zones and reduction zones above the pyrolysis zone, which would be the UP draft representation of what is in DOWN draft gasifiers which are designed to CONSUME the charcoal to make CO, not preserve the charcoal that can be called biochar.

It is errors like this IN PUBLISHDED PEER REVIEWED JOURNALS that spread distrust for such studies and even worse will mislead those who are learning the basics based on such articles.

In the References section, they did cite the 1996 article by Reed and Larson. But no mention of the Roth's excellent publication, nor any of other articles that are readily available.

PSA: That is enough for this review. I have productive work to do.

Luis: and two lists, cc paper's principal author (Prof. Juan Perez)

1. Here is a quite pertinent TLUD technical article, very recent, non-fee and many of the excellent citations are in Spanish:

Parametric Analysis of a Gasification-Based Cookstove as a Function of Biomass Density, Gasification Behavior, Airflow Ratio, and Design
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsomega.1c05137<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpubs.acs.org%2Fdoi%2Ffull%2F10.1021%2Facsomega.1c05137&data=04%7C01%7C%7C36ea82d077aa4348c17808d9fbce0326%7C085f983a0b694270b71d10695076bafe%7C1%7C0%7C637817684909093042%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C2000&sdata=BDiB2IOicm7onBNreZqc972WVKXAvsQgpKgIS0fU2vc%3D&reserved=0>

    2. You and your students could help char-making stove technologies a lot by attempting to raise this group's 10% char production to the 25% we normally expect.
Prof. Perez' team may not have been trying for maximum char - but many TLUD researchers and biochar promoters are.
My guess is that simply reducing the primary air flow will do a lot.
Your goal could be to determine the relative value of their blower - probably most helpful in getting a high TDR = turn down ratio.

3. I hope others on both lists will read the paper and comment on this team's 10% char production value.

Ron

Hello friends:

I am about to start an thesis work with 4 mechanical engineering graduating engineers from a local university on ENERGY USE from biochar small reactors in El Salvador. Now that our national agriculture school is promoting the use and manufacture of BC with small units we intend to prove the use of the energy and test to find the most adecuate models for our agricultors.

If any one can give advises please do so! remember this is for poor countries, some similar work samples would be ver useful
