Dear Tony

Is there a hole in the middle of the tree? Sometimes?

Is it soft in the centre?

What I understand about the "candle" is that the wood has to be really dry. True?

Next, is a palm trunk dry? Is it a sponge?

Is it suitable for creating the vertical cuts of the candle using a bush knife? Maybe the cuts could be vee-shaped.

All the ones I have seen were cut with a chainsaw.

Thanks
Crispin

Hi Everyone,
I have recently come back from Haku on Buka Island in Bougainville and
missed the 24 of October message regarding the steel bands. No
internet or phone service. In Haku we found the most versatile
firewood to be dead coconut palm. Very suited to the rocket stove we
tested if split. However, if a log was cut from the trunk, a full
slice of about 100mm maybe up to 200mm it might work like a Swedish
log candle. Probably not needing a hole punched all the way down. It
is quite fibrous and if sitting on a trivet or something to get the
air underneath I think the air would flow through. Lit from the top in
the middle it might burn quite well. Has anyone on the list tried this
out or could they? Unfortunately in Brisbane, Australia I don’t have
access to coconut trunks.
This could be a solution for their smokey traditional fires that burn
a mix of timber grade wood, coconut husks and bush sticks. The latter
including mango wood and other pretty useless wood.
Thanks.

Regards,
Tony Blake
