Dear Kevin,
i just updated my homepages with 4 low-cost devices for charing fluffy biomass like coffee husks, etc.

Concerning bamboo - we carbonized it well in an adam-retort kiln in Ghana, we used wire mesh cages for loading and offloading into the wood chamber.

In Africa, we are turning bamboo and elephant grass waste into char using the top down burn method.  Bamboo farmers trim the leaves, branches and tops to sell poles.  The leaves, branches and tops are considered waste and usually left on the ground to rot.  My colleague in Malawi (Clement) sees the potential and has hired 10 men to char the bamboo waste.  They make 180 large bags of char per day.  From this, they make 60 large bags of briquettes to replace wood charcoal.  I’m sure this char would work well as a biochar soil amendment.

I'm sure this has been done before. Does anyone have experiences they can share?

Thanks, Kevin
