At least in my zipcode I'm not all that special (though I appreciate the
nod). In other zipcodes for which I have distributional data on residential
energy consumption I was/would not be either. My point is as you say that
there are not only other ways to get low numbers, but many people are
already achieving those numbers with no special assistance from folks like
us. In fact we don't really know very much about how they achieve such low
numbers (e.g., a few percent of the mean in their areas). I am currently
working on a project in California where we are looking at exactly this
question. Give me another year and we should have some interesting insights.

I do think the passive house idea is generally inspiring, and all
houses/households with low energy bills should be appreciated, studied,
replicated.
