Greetings, Anand,

I'd like to you and the group a perusal of the articles on CO in
wikipedia. I'm on my way to a reformed conference in the historic
Reformation City of Heidelberg today, so I can't do more than give a
couple of links and suggest that any of you that glean any information
that are from wikipedia in other languages (or other sources) not
included here or contribute to the development of the wikipedia articles.

"In biology, carbon monoxide is naturally produced by the action of heme
oxygenase <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heme_oxygenase> 1 and 2 on the
heme <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heme> from hemoglobin
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin> breakdown. This process
produces a certain amount of carboxyhemoglobin
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carboxyhemoglobin> in normal persons, even
if they do not breathe any carbon monoxide. Following the first report
that carbon monoxide is a normal neurotransmitter in 1993,^[4]
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide#cite_note-nytimes.com-3>
as well as one of three gases that naturally modulate inflammatory
responses in the body (the other two being nitric oxide
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide> and hydrogen sulfide
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_sulfide>), carbon monoxide has
received a great deal of clinical attention as a biological regulator.
In many tissues, all three gases are known to act as anti-inflammatories
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-inflammatories>, vasodilators
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasodilators> and encouragers of
neovascular <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neovascular> growth.^[5]
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide#cite_note-ReferenceA-4>
Clinical trials of small amounts of carbon monoxide as a drug, are
on-going."

regards,
ron
