Hey Paul and Hugh, I mean "Drs. McLaughlin and Anderson" of course,

Quick note from rainy Arusha.

Field testing of the Jet City J seed TLUD, now dubbed Jiko Safi -- safi means clean, neat, cool -- is underway. About 2 dozen have been made to date, with orders for 200 backing up, and a target of 1000 over the next year. Not sure yet if fabrication or distribution will be the greater bottleneck, but at long last we are on our way past prototypes to making and marketing Jatropha-fueled stoves. Allahuakbar!

We've managed to create 4 different batch size options using platform risers in the fuel chamber, so cooks can choose to burn a full 750gr of seed for a gasified burn of about 100 minutes (plus longer combustion of charred seeds), or incrementally smaller amounts of seed for shorter cooking times. So far though we are field testing with only the full chamber option.

There's a clear demand for institutional size stoves, but we will probably stick to the family size unit for now ... it would be tempting to go on inventing rather than 'mass' production of the best model we have at the moment, but we've got funding for production/distribution for another 12 months only and must get on with it

Cost reduction remains critical, so we eliminated the insulation and its supporting circular ring of metal (with no loss in performance, a fact which Dr. Dave explains with a lot of combustion hocus-pocus), and plan to have stove tops made by tinsmiths like your buddy Sadaam did in Kampala.

I haven't seen it, but reportedly Bjarne has significantly re-designed his jiko mbono to accommodate the pellets made of J seedcake and hammered rice husks (they had to raise the seedcake proportion to 50% to make pellets that would stay together). 500 gm of pellets burn for 30-45 minutes, I'm told. His stove now has no chimney, but he still claims it will gasify how seeds ... hmmm ... maybe there's a fan in there somewhere -- I can almost feel Hugh interest rising.

Carrol and I are coming home to Vermont this weekend for a long stay in the US. Hope we can talk soon.

Happy Easter and good luck with the up-coming CHAR camp DownUnder!

Jonathan

> Dear Stovers,
>
> Gasifier stoves are relatively small scale devices for heat production
> and with optional biochar output. They are featured at the 5-day
> workshop near Byron Bay, Australia on 30 April - 4 May. This event is
> part of the efforts by the Biomass Energy Foundation (BEF) to
> disseminate gasifier stove technologies around the world, especially
> the TLUD pyrolytic cookstoves.
>
> This is very much a hands-on event to put into practice what Drs.
> McLaughlin and Anderson will be presenting there. Feel free to
> contact either of us (psanders at ilstu.edu), or contact the host of the
> event, Dr. Paul Taylor, in Australia at potaylor at bigpond.com
>
> The first two days will be a rather structured combination of teaching
> and hands
> on making and using biochar devices. Participants will learn about
> principles and practices, including issues of Natural Draft (ND) and
> Fan Assisted (FA) devices. The last 3 days will see small groups
> choosing either cookstoves or larger scale exemplary biochar maker
> projects at manageable sizes, and
> getting down to create the results we want.
>
> A flyer about the workshop/camp that also explains the "early bird"
> discounted registration that ends 17 April is found at:

> 2) Australian dollars are virtually equal now to US dollars.
>
> This is also a great reason to start some vacation time in wonderful
