Vacancy - RESEARCH OFFICER
The use of energy in households results in unacceptably high levels of
harmful human, financial
and economic consequences. Since 1994, the Paraffin Safety Association of
Southern Africa
(PASASA), a non-profit organization based in Cape Town, has been promoting
the safe use of
paraffin in low-income South African households by:
. Providing training and educational material to paraffin users through a
network of
partnerships. These include NGOs, community groups, emergency and healthcare
workers, or any other group or individual who can effectively disseminate
safety
information.
. Working with industry, regulatory organisations and other bodies to set
safety standards,
lobbying government to have these made mandatory and to enforce the
mandatory
standards.
. Compiling a knowledge base about the domestic use of energy and its
consequences by
conducting injury and appliance surveillance, research, and collating and
interpreting all
available, relevant information.
The organisation is not in the business of promoting paraffin or any related
products. In fact, this is an exciting time for the Association as it has
just expanded its mandate to address the risks and safety issues linked to
all energy carriers used within households. This includes candles,
LPG,electricity, coal, wood, and ethanol gel.
Job Description & Responsibilities
PASASA has a vacancy in their Cape Town Office (Claremont) for a Research
Officer. Although it
is envisaged as a permanent project, this is an eight month contract with a
view to renewal
based on successful fundraising.
. The purpose of the Research Officer position is to provide support to the
Senior Project
Manager for Research, Education and Safer Systems.
. The incumbent will be involved in the development and maintenance of the
GIS-based
surveillance system of the Association - which includes data on
energy-related injuries,
paraffin usage, appliances, fires and community surveys. The system also
includes information
on the Association's activities in order to act as a reporting tool.
. Working in collaboration with the regional staff and volunteers, the
Research Officer will ensure that accurate and complete information is
collected by supporting and supervising a team of part-time data capturers
as well as managing databases and ensuring data quality.
. The incumbent will also be involved in data analyses and in producing
reports on the
surveillance system data and other research matters.
Requirements
. A Bachelor's degree in either social, environmental or health sciences or
the equivalent.
Consideration will also be given to those without a degree but with relevant
work
experience.
. Research skills including preparation of research protocols, ensuring data
quality, data
analysis, and monitoring and evaluation.
. Research paper and report writing skills including explaining trends and
interpreting data.
. Experience in preparing and presenting papers at conferences is an
advantage.
. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel,
PowerPoint, Access and
Word.
. Familiarity with database software and knowledge management.
. Oral and written knowledge of English is required.
. Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision and to
be part of a
team.
. Supervision experience is an asset.
Salary - Between R20 000.00 - R24 000.00 per month and benefits depending on
experience and
qualifications.
To Apply - send your motivation letter and detailed CV with contactable
references by email to
cecile at paraffinsafety.org or by fax 086 505 6703 before 12h00, Friday 20
April 2012. Introduce your letter of motivation by stating exactly where you
first saw the advert. Regret no relocation or interview travel costs will
apply.
PASASA values equal opportunity and development of new local talent,
therefore this position is
open for local hire - limited to resident South African citizens. Only
shortlisted applicants will be contacted. Candidates will be invited to the
interview process and be subjected to competency assessments. If you do not
hear from us within two weeks of the closing deadline, please assume that
you have not been shortlisted.

Dear Stovers and Especially Vintage Stovers Who Remember How Things Used To
Be

Envirofit has a product catalogue out:

http://www.envirofit.org/files/Envirofit%20Product%20Overview2012.pdf

Look through the stoves and accessories, paying attention to the detail
delivered on the pot supports. A great deal of thought has gone into these
products.

What is most impressive is the significant step up these products are in
quality and reliability compared with the efforts the global stoves
community over the previous years. It is truly a maturing industry. There
are viable career paths for thermal and materials engineers, as also
witnessed by the development of the GEK gasification systems.

For those who recall the Shell support for stove programmes in the past,
this is the result of the focussing of the funding for their 5 million
stoves on 5 continents idea on a single private venture. The task was
tendered (by invitation) and Envirofit was given the opportunity to come up
with a set of stove solutions and bring them to the world.

The performance of each product is listed but I was unable to find on their
website the test protocol that it says it located at www.eecl.colostate.edu

If anyone has a copy and can post a link please do so. It is important that
we know how the testing was done and how the performance was calculated.

Thanks

Crispin
