For those of you who remain interested in this tale, here is a related  
article about a pilot project in the Canton of Tulcan, Carchi Province,  
where the government has introduced single burner induction hotplates to  
over 3,000 households as a way of reducing the thriving gas cylinder  
smuggling business along the border with Colombia.  It seems to be working  
out about as well as could be expected.
