[Stoves] TLUD fuel question

I frequent see people write tune the fuel to the TLUD. 
I know very loose fuel burn too fast other fuels pack so tight no air flows.
The other day I went the exdpensive of  whole bag of wood chips for a smoker
thinking now I will relly seem my XL woodgass unit run after all my experimental 
stuff.  I bunr half way down went out an turn my kitchen into a smoke house.

Can someone provide a nice review of fuel tuning?
