Stoves List

Report on Second Day at ETHOS (Saturday, 24 Jan, 2015) (Paul Anderson has answered how to get Christa Roth Book. Christa is justly proud of input from professional layout expert.)

I. Actual Stoves. From about &:30 to 8:30 able to visit a few booths
    	1. Impressed by Adrian demonstrating assembly of small Rocket at $16 - in a few minutes; minimum tools. no nuts and bolts - only tabs and crimping. Can ship flat; see www.rocketqorks.org (out of South Africa).
	2. Same for 4-5 new stoves from Aprovecho. Have been getting early consumer reactions in three countries. One has easy top feeding of added fuel for a T-LUD. Smaller unit possibly headed for US market with a glass upper “chimney”

II. 8:30 New Board for ETHOS introduced. Elissa Derby of Winrock is now Chair (replacing Mark Bryden)

[Most of rest below will be available soon at ETHOS website as PPts. Apologies for keeping short and having likely errors.]

III. One hour presentation about GACC; Ranyee Chang and GACC Associate
Used unusual method of asking audience for questions in matrix of 20-25 different categories, such as (piced in this order by audience)
	1. Understanding vs generation of demand
	2. Investment
	3. Enterprise Funds
	4. Liquid Fuels
	5. Focus Countries
	6. The GACC Future Summit held Nov. 20-21 see http:// www.cookstovesfuturesummit.org/commitments/. Next likely to be in Ghana in November
	7. Testing Centers; sustainability Quality Round Robin Testing
	8. Gender.
	9. Progress to 100 million by 2020
	10.. 2015-2017
Conclusion - GACC is a major force in stove world; many things happening. Much based on their Jan 2011 Workshop, Report came out in May, 2011

IV. Elliott Levin DoE Bioenergy Technologies Office. Goals: 90% emissions reductions, 50 % fuels savings
Have 9 projects; 8 being discussed here; 4 today (below); They are in Phase 3 now - Knowledge and Data Sharing. Webinars will be coming
#1. David Stokes from RTI in Research Triangle NC. Have worked with Envirofit on Thermoelectric-Enhance Cookstove Add-on (TECA) $20 goal for add-on.
#2. Tim Theiss ORNL Corrosion avoidance; goal of 10,000 hours operation over 4-5 yrs. Mostly working with alloys - using salt-infused wood; all output will be in Public domain
#3. Jonathon Posner; Prof U Washington, gasifier, working with Paul Means of Burn Design Lab (BDL) and grip in Kenya. Doing modeling (see below on talk by Anamol Pundie) and by Ben Sullivan tomorrow
#4. Ryan Knives (?) Biolite Working with Plancha; using Auto desk; CFD Slides looked very good.

V. First Parallel Session Breakout - I chose group 2 - Design; Others on Adoption in Asia, and TLUDs (my favorite, but want to better understand modeling .
#1. Kathleen Lask Cone - difference for faster starts. About a 40% time savings. Have derived a square root equation for velocity vs power, Good agreement with experiment.
#2. Kevin DeSchino of CSU; Used the Envirofit M5000 stove, tried to reduce emissions with Exhaust Gas Recirculation; later more improvement with added air. found optimum flow rates exist.
#3. Anamol Pundle of U Washington modeling for a 4 kW stove Excess air 300-500%. Will be adding a radiation and soot sub-model. Will provide Open source software

VI Afternoon Panel. 2:00-3:00 Explanation of ISO Process. Led by John Mitchell (EPA) and Ranyee Chang (GACC)
WG1 - Conceptual Framework Intro by Tami Bond (Lead is Harold Annegarn from South Africa)
WG 2 Harmonized LAB Test Protocol; Intro by Michael Johnson
WG3 Field Testing; intro by Sachin Joshi
WG4 Social Impacts; Intro by Elissa Derby
also two task forces discussed by Christian L’Orange: 1. Communication; 2. Fuels

VI. PM Breakout #2 (3:15 - 2 hours) (I chose #1 option (Africa) since I have worked in three African countries); others were 2) Design and 3) Program Updates
	#1. Darfur Sudan Daniel Wilson
	#2. Michelle Kreger. Ethiopia
#3. Pam Jagger (Univ. NC.) Malawi Stoves or Sugar? Serioua deforestation. Prof Jagger ran a survey of her audience for prize ((Interviewees chose stoves over sugar!)

VII 4:30 - 5:30 Panel Discussion
	1. Michael Johnson of Berkeley stove monitoring
	2. Christian L’Orange CSU described work on EPA Star - Modeling with a Climate orientation 25 cookstove/fuel combinations NIH study coming up on health relative risk 48 hours - volunteers paid to see health hazards fem stove smoke near Tier 2 and 3 levels.
3. Christa Roth Emphasizes we need more than health (enviro, climate, poverty, energy (security access; similar to her Friday night (her book available). How do we communicate a difficult subject?
4. Nordica MacCarty almost Phd at ISU (coming to ETHOS since 2003), Mentioned Nathan Johnson doing similar work (article on village energy in Energy
5. Raynee Chang (GACC) - Her view of stove work as the product of three factors a b c; a. Performance, quality, durability ; b. Time to adoption, use.; c. Scale (level of impact, Heath, Environment, Livelihoods

VIII Dean Still ; Plenary 7:00 -8:00 Went through 5 new stove models being tested - explaining new features of each. All different types.
