[Stoves] NGO is looking for a stove update in production process

Todd at Silverfire has unfortunately pointed out a truly sad state of affairs. There are many great stoves of all kinds.
However the world shipping industry has now managed to make it near impossible for people to get samples
for experimental or testing.

Probably the most extreme example was the TLUD stove made in Indonesia. The stove costs about a nominal 20.00 USD
but shipping it to the Marshall Islands was in the hundreds. It was finally shipped, swapped, hand carried and mailed: Indonesia to Europe
to the USA to the Marshall Islands. Absolutely absurd but a true testament to all sharing bond of stove advocates workers and supporters all
the way around the world. A really epic journey.

Off the shelf micro TLUD gasifier:

Available in brushed 304SS or economy 201 SS, with or without pot, fire starter, & utensils (in event interested in not wasting time with tin cans with short duration stove life). Bad news International postage fees $46 to Germany. All configurations ship at the 1 KG package rate, so best value complete 304 SS Ultimate Scout kit.

  Dear Paul,

thanks for the hint towards very small TLUD micro gasifier. But we are somehow more interested in using charcoal as we don`t have a proper wood supply where we are based in Malawi. What I mean is that the locals cutting down uncontrolled huge areas of forest in order to have some wood for their firing. So we decided not to support that even when we are not sure where the charcoals comes from…

But maybe you can convince us that wood is better to use instead of charcoal though? I liked the point with the fast ignition of wood a lot. How can the made charcoal with TLUD mirco-gasifier be used afterwards?

And where can we buy those mirco-gasifier?

  Regards
  Deniz

    Dear Deniz,

You have asked the correct group for advice. There are several options that you could consider.

I will advocate that you consider a very small TLUD (tee-lud) micro-gasifier, and I will assist you if you desire that type of heat source.

Please see my website www.drtlud.com for the basics about the technology, but very little about units that are as small as you will desire (but I can assist you about the very small ones.)

HOWEVER, these stoves do NOT use charcoal. (actually they make charcoal, but that is a different side of the story). Charcoal is notoriously slow to ignite, which is one of your requirements.

I assume that you have already considered using a candle (or a few candles). The very small TLUD micro-gasifiers can provide the amount of heat you need. They are very clean burning even at cookstove sizes, so the tiny TLUD that you need COULD probably be used indoors (depends on room size and ventilation issues).

Looking forward to assisting you. You may reply via the Stoves Listserv because some readers are interested in such topics, but eventually for detailled work we would use my personal email address which is psanders at ilstu.edu

      Dear cooking stoves experts,

I am working for the non-profit NGO OneDollarGlasses. We have the mission to set up a social business in development countries worldwide to provide high-quality and affordable glasses to people in need. The glasses are produced by locals in these countries. To ensure that the manufacturing is possible and reliable at any time we have developed a currentless production process.

One part of this process is to heat shrinking tubes with a stove (attachment 1 and attachment 2). For us it seems like that the current stove which we are using is outdated, not healthy neither for the manufacturer nor for the nature and inefficient. So we are looking for some new technologies of stoves which we can implement in our production process. This is the reason why I am addressing this email to you to get expert-input.

The shrinking tube (attachment 3) is made out of irradiation crosslinked Polyolefin and has a shrinking temperature of +120°C. Attachment 4 gives some more information on the shrinking tubes (unfortunately this is only available in German, but easy to translate).

The requirements of the new stove are

a.. that we do have a temperature of roundabout +120°C somewhere near the stove
b.. that the temperature should be reached really fast
c.. that the combustion last for at least 10 minutes
d.. that we can use charcoal
e.. that the combustion is high efficient and has a low-emission

Maybe there is a stove out there, that suits our needs. :-)

I would be more than happy to get some feedback and/or input and can`t wait to start into a discussion on how we can improve our production process.

      Warmest regards
      Deniz
