Dear Norbert

Thanks for that support. It is a good example of how wood smoke, in that community, promotes asthma attacks in people who already have asthma.

We have ample proof from Central Asia that dung, wood and coal smoke causes COPD and the incidence is nearly 100% in people over 40 in the highlands.

What do not understand is why the number of people with asthma has risen rapidly as the general air quality has improved. It may be far better controlled, but the incidence has risen a lot.

In places like Ulaanbaatar those with asthma suffer on smoky days in winter, if the PM is from plants, the desert, roads and combustion, particularly from burning garbage and tires‎, and of course the old stoves.

My complaint is about the many published claims (not medical papers) saying that ambient air pollution causes asthma.

It that were true they should get the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

They can use the money work on a cure for HTLV-1 next.

Regards
Crispin

The cleaner the air in North America, the more common asthma there is. Is cleaner air contributing to the shortening of lives in North America? On the face of it, possibly.

"...The report also shows that asthma hospitalization rates tend to be higher in urban areas in Canada, compared to rural and remote areas.

"Our air is pretty pristine, and air pollution is shown to be a factor associated with asthma exacerbation," said Brendan Hanley, Yukon's Chief Medical Officer of Health.

In places such as Nova Scotia and Ontario, asthma hospitalization rates are much higher in urban centres compared to rural, the report said. A similar comparison wasn't included for Yukon because of a lack of data.

But Hanley said Yukon's air quality is not perfect. He says air pollution tends to spike in residential areas due to wood-burning, but those tend to be short-term exposures.

Other possible reason for Yukon's low rate could be attributed to good access to primary care for children with asthma and good rates of controls in terms of medication, according to Hanley."
