Crispin:

Thanks for forwarding the "Heated Up" results from the National Mall.

https://forgreenheat.blogspot.com/2019/01/thermoelectric-wood-stoves-solar-power.html

I noted Aprovecho came in the last place and claimed their focus was on the
poor, not maximizing power. Note the size of TEG unit on downdraft rocket
stove and this was post-EPA or DOE grant of over $90,000, was it? This
monstrosity produced only 12 watts of power? Hardly viable for 3rd world
application due to cost, size, and lack of proven durability. It appears
to only be physically adaptable to a very large institutional stove. There
are lots of handheld solar battery options available just for a few bucks
in direct contrast. Our TEG that has been on the market for over 2 years
is a novelty wok stove now and although twice as powerful as the BioLites
sold at REI, is not viable for 3rd World applications, due to the expense
and low power output for single families, unless subsidized. Handheld
photovoltaic battery charging units currently available offer more capacity
and storage, as well as being more cost-effective and viable is my point.

Bottom line: The units presented on the Mall that provided real power are
years away from mass production and currently are cost prohibitive for 3rd
World household stoves. The Aprovecho claim that their focus for the poor
does not appear to be truthful either, as a DOE consultant contacted our
organization several weeks ago to request our input on this technology
since we had such a commercial product available for the last 2 years. The
DOE hired consultant explained Dean Still personally was pushing for
funding and development for the Prepper market (hardly 3rd World focus, as
claimed by Aprovecho in the Heated Up presentation at the Mall).

We sent another 1,000 stoves to the Marshall Islands they received in
December. If the grant had been directed towards household stoves, I would
have been able to place both a stove and a viable cell phone battery
charging unit in 2,000 homes and covered container shipping costs too! We
have always been proactive describing our TEG stove as a really fun high
powered Wok fan stove with very limited charging capacity. We have a long
way to go with TEG technology and cost-effective solutions as you have
correctly stated.
