Dear Friends

I found an article on the social science behind the development of the Indonesian improved stove pilot (2012-2017) that will be of interest to testers.

"Contextual Design and Promotion of Clean Biomass Stoves: The Case of the Indonesia Clean Stove Initiative"

This article covers the attitudes and background thinking behind the test sequence used in an attempt to reasonably predict the performance of a stove in "typical use" in a laboratory setting.

It must first be established what "typical" means and what the goal of performance assessment is. Note particularly the ranking of "features" or attributes of a stove according to the women (96% of users), and how it differs from those of the project (or government, or vendors, or just about any interested party).

Stoves should be selected for promotion based on their features and chance of successful adoption. The ranking of features by users varies from place to place. The contextual testing attempts to capture that.

Regards
Crispin
