Dear Dr Raman

You now, I made the same comparison when I first heard about a “breakthrough” two years ago.  At the time I was told it would be available in “2 or 3 years” and the mooted efficiency was 35%.  This recent announcement and explanation fits that description so I am assuming the technology is the same.

The breakthrough is the generation of electron motion “parallel to the heat flow direction”.

Dear All,
The discussion on TEG is very much interesting. Earlier I worked on TEG subject and published the results in Energy Journal.
35% efficiency and 100 $ per kW looks unbelievable numbers. If it happens that will be a great breakthrough. Even, The IC engine’s power generation efficiency is less than 30% only. Let us hope for the best.

It is a little to describe without drawings but essentially it is like this:

A regular TEG creates current across the line of contact between the two metals that are heated and cooled, that is, along the glue that joins them. As a result the generator is a large number of tiny generators soldered together, directing the electricity towards the cold side.

The new invention produces a current in the same direction as the heat flow. As a result the generator occupies the entire surface and is not made of a lot of tiny parts. The whole surface is "generator" and it has no circuitry. There is therefore a far simpler fabrication process. I understand it is baked twice, first at more then 1100 C then again higher. It means it will be able to operate in a flame environment as far as I conceive it. Being cooled continuously on the back means the front face could be very hot so no need for thermal bonding.

All these features indicate a game-changer for off-grid generation. Imagine a bit attached to your car's exhaust pipe generating 50 or 100 kW.

This is really of interest to people living in Ontario, however it points a way forward to include more biomass-fired heating and cogeneration of electricity.

It is public knowledge and posted here to stimulate discussion.

There is a new technological breakthrough for Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) which should hit the market in a few years.  It gives a dramatic improvement in conversion efficiency (heat to electricity).  According to disparate sources, the efficiency might be in the range of 35% and the cost is slashed.  We can talk of $100 per KW for the modules.

The laws in Ontario have been updated with advice from the CSA technical committee rewriting B415.1 – the standard for space heating appliances that burn wood.  There is even a new method for assessing the emissions of site-built masonry heaters in B415.1.  The general idea is to promote wood fuel over diesel in remote communities.

As new TEGs become available, it is a very attractive option and smaller and smaller scale.
