 Dear Prof Paul,
Thank you for your email. I'm happy to introduce my self to the biochar community.
I am currently subscribed to the biochar list (most recently), and yet to be added to the stove list.
To the readers, I am Hussein Kisiki Nsamba (Ph.D) a lecturer at the section of Industrial Chemistry, department of Chemistry Makerere University (Uganda).
My major competences on biochar are on its upstream processing especially involving its production and characterisation. My first biochar encounter started in 2009-2010 where I worked on a project sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia (MOSTI)  where we gasified biochar for Hydrogen production which was the basis for my Master of Science (Chemical Engineering). Part of our findings included :
1. Effect of Equivalence Ratio and Particle Size on EFB Char Gasification

The second encounter was between 2011-2013 where together with other project partners, we worked on a project sponsored by the Norwegian Research Council (Biochar on acidic agricultural lands in Indonesia and Malaysia) where part of our findings can be accessed via
1. 1.    http://www.ngi.no/en/Project-pages/Biochar/MalaysiaIndonesia/2013-developments---Biochar-Indonesia/2. http://www.ngi.no/upload/Prosjektweb/Biochar/Sluttrapport%20NorGlobal%20nett.pdf3.http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?paperID=521974.http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?paperID=555305.http://www.scirp.org/journal/PaperInformation.aspx?paperID=54431
As part of the above project, we produced and characterised biochar from cooking stoves and scaled up the stove design for large scale biochar production. Our upscaled design was used to produce about 600Kg of biochar which was applied on Malaysian acidic soils to enhance biochar-soil functions. The above project was the basis for my first Ph.D (Chemical engineering).
And finally, my most recent encounter  has been working on a project in the UK which is part of an international consortium project which aims to develop hybrid bioenergy system for rural applications. As part of this project, we tested the usage of a 10KWe power pallet (manufactured by allpower labs) to produce electricity alongside biochar and the project is nearly concluded forming the basis for my second Ph.D (Chemical engineering)
In brief, I have had the chance to work on biochar and cooking stoves with experience in Africa, Asia and Europe. My next interest would be to look at using cooking stoves for power generation and biochar alongside cooking -  I am keen to take the findings beyond laboratory trials but to practically use them for tailor made designs especially for the developing World.
I hope the above introduction clarifies my biochar background with current and prospective interests.

 Sincerely yours;

Hussein Kisiki Nsamba (PhD)

Dear Hussein and all with Uganda and East Africa ,

Good to hear that you are back into Uganda.   Those of us (including Nolbert of Awamu)  with activities producing and selling char-making cookstoves (TLUD style) will appreciate your efforts regarding biochar.

Would you please (re-)introduce yourself to the readers of the Stoves Listserv and the Biochar Listserv.   Your research areas are of great interest, but do not YET say Biochar:

 Hello Mutaasa,

It is good news to hear about biochar developments in East Africa, us at Makerere University are indeed eager to be part of this and looking forward to making our contributions.

Please keep us posted and let us know how we can add value to the events. I thank Lloyd for keeping me in the know after a long while !

I would also wish to inform you that I am finally back from Malaysia to Uganda especially to add value to the biochar industry. We can work together to achieve this.

 Sincerely

Thank you for reminding me that CSAYN-Uganda will be launching an
"EAST AFRICAN BIOCHAR INITIATIVE" (EABI) through our Climate Smart
 (Ag) [CSA] Initiative / Network.

It is good to know that three (3) Universities (Makerere, Mbaarara
and Gulu Universities) will be involved in this.

Have you contacted the INTERNATIONAL BIOCHAR INITIATIVE (IBI) about
 Membership already?

With regards to having one of the CSAYN-USA coordinators attend the
Biochar Production and Cook Stove Events in Oregon in August, you
would have to ask either AISHU N. and/or BILL SOSINSKY @ ENERGIME
UNIVERSITY (New York), which hosts the main "hub" for CSAYN-USA,
whether they will be able to attend the event on behalf of CSAYN-USA.
