[Stoves] Stoves Digest, Vol 101, Issue 18

Guys;

If the feedstock is dry and you set a TLUD on fire and walk away to come
back later, there is a high probability that the char will simply complete
to ash losing the value of putting it in the soil for crop enhancement. Not
sure I would promote this practice. Of course, it is a small amount of char
that would be lost and would probably not be that important - but still the
amount collected can be substantial in fact, more than you would
expect. Here on the Olympic Peninsula in my Sequim organic gardeners
group, one couple asked me about making biochar in an ammunition can in
their wood stove with a daily burn. I explained how and how to save it etc.
etc. They never said a word about how that was going. Several months later
in fact, the following spring, I asked if they had followed up and
accumulated any biochar. She replied "oh yes we have a 55 gal. barrel
forward and put on the garden later when we deal the garden". Turns out it
was a substantial amount of needed coverage for a personal garden.
