[Gasification] No time for beer in Munich- there's a real live imbert gasifier here

Jim,

I wonder of the gasifier groups in Finland and Sweden who have been
represented on this list have done gas analysis. We have certainly seen some
reuse of WWI equipment http://www.vedbil.se

http://www.woodgas.fi

http://www.ekoautoilijat.fi/tekstit/kalustoesittely.htm

I saw a German gas producer last month in a museum in Northeastern Brazil.
It had been one of the "gaseificadores" used in 1943 to run tractors on a
sugar plantation. They did show a film of plowing with the gasifier powered
tractor but unfortunately pictures and probing were not allowed in the
museum.

Sounds like a very instructive visit. We saw one in less detail in a Danish
museum. Pics are great...

tom, i thought i remembered reading in one of your books that you had a real
imbert early at nrel. somehow i seem to remember some story of you running
wood pellets in it. am i remembering this correctly?

it would be highly interesting to actually get one of these to run with full
instrumentation. while i can wave hands about what i saw and how it likely
ran in relation to what we know now, a proper run with the equivalent
datalogging we use on ours would be highly informing. unlikely we'd ever
get the dm unit to do this. maybe we can find/borrow one from elsewhere.

tom, there will be many more pictures of the insides. the interesting parts
are all the insides of the reactor, and how elaborate the filtering system
was.

..what year are these 2 gasifiers, or rather,
when where they last serviced or modified?

both i now realize have been rebuilt, or rather, cleaned up and rerun in
more contemporary times. the specifics of this i have yet to figure out.
with a little more work we likely can. the history of the exhibits in the
dm is very well kept. another interesting thing that surfaced is that the
dm has a very large archive where they collect and keep machinery manuals,
brochures and general consumable literature on these type of devices. it is
very likely there is some interesting things to discover there too.

either way, as for these machines, they've had some attention and been run
in more recent times. the fuel in the adler one is more recently cut
dimensioned lumber, not the wwII fuel. i took some samples from the char at
various levels if we want to explore it.

the filters on the adler have been cleaned and repainted and never run
after. the yellow thing in the picture with me is a baffle plate array from
the horizontal ash tube on the side of the reactor. the baffle array was
brand new. the tube and all plumbing was original. the water filter and
packed bed in the front were cleaned out, but still original. the reactor
itself is unrestored, like the rest of the adler. all the vessels show some
rust and age, but are still well intact. they seem to be either 16 or 18awg
mild steel. the hearth is cast, about 1/4 - 3/8" thick.

the ford truck has had a full off frame restoration. they appear to have
done the gasifier at the same time. then ran it again, as the bottom of the
reactor has all the paint burned off, just like ours! the water filter was
very messy inside. i didn't see in the rest as i didn't have permission for
that one.

the dm runs lots of their equipment. they do demos for visitors, and appear
to take some out for special ocassions. it is far from a hands on museum,
but they do run and move around the equipment it appears. there are
pictures of various machines in parades and such. the dm is a major
national project, and they enjoy showing some of the accomplishments. there
are a good deal of steam engines set up to run on compressed air within the
museum. several of the very large ones, like the watt engine, are run on
compressed air. the whole room smells of machine oil. some of the ic
engines simiarly have exhaust pipes ported to vents so they can be run.

somehow in this, both of the gasifiers were run recently. not a ton, but a
bit, and certainly more recently than wwII.
